Ader, Clement

(1841-1925)
engineer and inventor Called the "Father of Aviation," Clement Ader was born in Muret. in 1870, he manufactured a balloon that was launched successfully and then, in 1890, a heavier-than-air apparatus (Éole) powered by steam; it flew for a distance of 50 miles on October 9 of that year at Armainvilliers. The flight was not sustained, however, as he continuously brushed the ground from a height of about 20 centimeters, Ader's later attempts, supported by the war Ministry, were also unsuccessful. Greatly discouraged, he destroyed his plans and his inventions. Clement Ader coined the word avion to describe his various models: Avion I, Avion II, and so forth.
